The most common element of every self management literature has been the power of goal setting. The world tells you to have short-term goals, long-term goals, organisational goals, lifetime goals and the list goes on. No wonder the power of goal setting is very important as it helps us to convert the powerful sun rays into fire.
Goal-setting affects us in 2 ways:
- The fear of not being able to achieve the goal that has been set.
There are many reasons why we don’t achieve our goals. The biggest reason is setting unrealistic goals.
For example: New Year Resolutions. We feel that all of a sudden a new year will transform our life and we will change into our ideal personality overnight. This is like expecting a 2 year child to learn how to walk, ride a bicycle and write on the very same day. Our goals are based on illusions and lack of self-awareness.
2. Repentance of missing out.
Sometimes the things happen the other way round. When we accomplish our goals, we may feel pain as well. This is because we achieve our goals but at the expense of the other important things in our life.
For example: To secure a decent score in class 12th Boards, we put our health, mental state, relationships and friendships at stake. People sometimes do regret ignoring these aspects of life for a while too.
What must be our goal-setting based upon?
1. What: What do you desire to accomplish?
2. Why: Why do you want to accomplish it? Does it follow your mission?
3. How: How will you accomplish it?
The above 3 factors play a huge role in whether you will get there or not. Simply putting our goals on paper will get us nowhere. There has to be a proper format to set them, so that you can produce the best results out of them. Here I present you a very unique way to achieve your goals.
1. Keeping a ‘priority goals’ list:
Set a list of goals that are based upon your priorities. Have a self-awareness session and put your priorities in order and later set your goals. In this manner you will always be alert about your priorities. Having a constant reminder of goals helps you in managing your time as well!
2. Set a “perhaps” list:
This is the most important list. The biggest problem we have in dealing with goals is that often when we read a book, attend a seminar, watch a movie, etc., we get inspired by their goals and develop a strong desire to achieve them. We are not ready to achieve the goal or do not have the resources to do so, but don’t want to drop that idea. It wanders in our mind all the day and destroys our focus. The best step that we need to take is write it in a perhaps list. This means that you may make an attempt to achieve this goal someday, but not for the present. It’s for the future.
3. Set weekly goals:
Here’s a format of how you can note down your weekly goals.
Weekly goals are the most legitimate way to achieve your short-term goals. After achieving these goals, you feel like you took your first step towards your ultimate mission and then your intensity of goal-setting increases, followed by your efficiency of achieving them and it keeps your going.
To work towards any goal is an act of courage. When we exercise the courage to set and act on goals, we tend to achieve positive results. Slowly and steadily, our commitment becomes stronger than our moods. The power of goal-setting and accomplishing them increases our confidence and enables to bring out the best in us which pave the path of a better life which makes it lot more worth living! So, what are you waiting for? Start off right now with your goal-setting!
